After a hiatus in their history programs the Polk County Historical Association is pleased to announce on Tuesday, August 12th the monthly programs return. This month's topic is "Stories of the Flags from Colonial America and the Revolutionary War" presented by Robert Williamson at 2pm inside the museum at 33 Gibson Street in downtown Columbus.Williamson is the curator of the House of Flags Museum and has a wealth of knowledge about US flags. The House of Flags is home to over 300 flags from our nation's history. It is the only museum in the United States that is dedicated to the history and preservation of our American flags.
The presentation will feature the background that led up to their significance. As British subjects many colonists felt their rights were being trampled upon by King George III and Parliament. Hence the rattlesnake flag with the "Don't Tread On Me" message. Many other flags of that era speak to what people and their fighting forces believed. Most were willing to die for - Freedom and Liberty.
The Polk County History Museum has moved and is collocated with the House of Flags at 33 Gibson Street. It is behind the historic Polk County Courthouse. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions about our flags. The program will begin at 2pm on Tuesday, August 12th. The public is encouraged to attend.
